Tips for Buying a Used Front-Loading Washer

Updating your laundry room doesn't mean that you have to shell out the big bucks for brand-new appliances. It also doesn't mean you have to settle for an outdated washing machine. If you have your eyes on a front loader, but the price tag is making you hesitate, then consider shopping for a used version. Often, used appliance stores have a good selection of top-quality front loaders that you can purchase at a fraction of the price. The following tips can help you choose the best one.

Tip #1: Consider the size

Dryers tend to have a longer life expectancy than washers, so it isn't uncommon to upgrade your washer before you upgrade the dryer. This is where shopping used pays off. Since no one expects you to buy a set, most used deals aren't dependent on getting the set. This does mean that size matters, though. Most people prefer that the washer and dryer sit side by side with level tops so that the tops can be joined as a work surface. A mismatched set may not line up. Either take measurements of your dryer to avoid this or plan on setting the shorter machine on top of a pedestal to make them even.

Tip #2: Ask for a test run

Most appliance stores are more than happy to perform a test run of the used item for you. This means running through the short version of all the cycles to ensure that there are no problems. Don't just make sure the machine fills and drains; also verify that it agitates and spins out items properly. When the cycle is done, check the seal around the door carefully to make sure there are no leaks.

Tip #3: Look for rust

Most leakage issues with front loaders happen around the door opening. Fortunately, the appliance store should be willing to remove the front panel so you can perform a quick visual inspection. What you are looking for is signs of water damage where moisture seeped from the door seal and underneath the front panel at some point. This could appear as rust or corrosion. Finding this doesn't mean you shouldn't purchase the machine, especially if the store assures you the rust was due to a bad seal that was replaced. It does mean that you should make sure you have a warranty against future leaks, though.
